Betty Krazwyck

I first saw the Clayoquot Sound about 28 years ago

I was out here on a vacation

I was amazed and just stunned by the beauty of the area and the wildness

I promised myself that someday I would come back here, so I did.

I started looking up in this area for some land that we could afford, the second year we were here

I was totally befogged by the beauty of the area, so, I bought the 10 acres

I got totally involved with the flora and fauna of the area, and when we first bought the place, the man who sold it to us was a representative of a logging company

I thought they plant the trees back, I guess they grow back

I felt assured that the NDP would declare a moratorium and that there would not be any more clear-cutting.

I thought that even if there were problems with this, the Native peoples would protest

Marian and I, that’s my younger daughter, were in Mississippi at my mother’s place

we received the newsletter from the Friends, saying that indeed the NDP, they were not going to protect the Clayoquot Sound

I went to a meeting that night, I went, stood on the blockade and was arrested, and went to jail.

I wasn’t afraid of being arrested or afraid of even hardship, but I have a little bit of claustrophobia I was able to control it and that was the only thing that really bothered me!
